Both calcium chloride and chlorine products are industrial-grade chemicals. Calcium chloride is the safer of the two; chlorine compounds are reactive. Concrete rule: test before you dose, dose at dusk, never mix, retest before anyone swims.

Never mix chemical products

Never combine calcium chloride with chlorine (in any form — cal-hypo, dichlor, trichlor, liquid) in a bucket, in the skimmer, or in the same dosing container. Chemical reactions can release chlorine gas or generate heat. Mixing the two is a documented cause of chemical burns in backyard pools — keep them strictly separate.
